Moving Squarespace to Claude Code Yourself: A Realistic Guide
Short answer: Yes, you can. Claude Code can rebuild a Squarespace site as plain files fairly quickly. The building is the easy part. Most of the work, and most of the risk, is in everything around it: capturing every page and image, keeping your page addresses, setting up and testing redirects, and switching your domain without breaking email. Plan for days, not hours, and test everything before you launch.
What you’ll need
- A paid Claude plan. Claude Code is included in all paid plans. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.1
- Claude Code, in the desktop app, in your browser at claude.ai/code, or in a terminal.2 The browser version needs your site in GitHub.3
- A free GitHub account, to store your site’s files.
- A free Cloudflare account, to host it. Hosting plain files there is free, with no limit on visits.4
- Access to your domain settings and Google Search Console.
- Time. One guide estimates 2 to 8 hours for a typical 10 to 20 page site, and a weekend with 50 or more blog posts.5 One owner who did it spent 2 days building and 3 more days fixing problems.6
The steps
1. Capture everything before you start
The Squarespace export covers only basic pages and one blog.7 Before you build, save:
- Every page address, from your sitemap and Search Console
- Every image and file, downloaded
- Your custom CSS and code injection5
- Your redirects from Settings › Developer Tools › URL Mappings8
- Your domain and email settings

2. Build the site with Claude Code
Start a new project and give Claude Code your site’s address, your export file, and your saved CSS. Ask it to rebuild each page as plain files, using a simple site framework such as Astro.5
Prompts that help:
- “Rebuild every page listed in this sitemap. Keep every page address exactly the same.”
- “Match the fonts, colours, and spacing of the live site. Here’s my custom CSS.”
- “Use the images in this folder, not links to Squarespace.”
Expect several rounds. Compare each page to the original, on a phone and a laptop.
3. Keep addresses the same, and redirect the rest
Every page that keeps its exact address needs no redirect. For everything that changes, add a permanent redirect. On Cloudflare, that’s a _redirects file with one line per address.9 Full method: The Redirect Checklist
4. Put it online and test it privately
Save the project to GitHub and connect it to Cloudflare. Test on Cloudflare’s preview address before touching your domain.
5. Switch your domain
Point your domain’s website records at Cloudflare. Leave your email records alone. See Keep Your Domain and Email.
6. Test everything again, live
Test every redirect on the live site, submit your new sitemap in Search Console, and watch for “not found” pages for the next few weeks. Keep Squarespace running until you’re sure.
What usually goes wrong
One owner who moved from Squarespace to Cloudflare with Claude listed the problems they hit after building:6
- Clean addresses returned “not found.” Pages like
/portfoliodidn’t load until redirects were added. - The sitemap and redirects didn’t match. The sitemap listed addresses the redirects didn’t cover.
- An endless redirect loop. Their redirects sent
/portfolioto/portfolio.html, while Cloudflare sent it back again. - A broken find-and-replace that damaged every article and needed a script to repair.
They fixed all of it. The lesson: when Google finds a page showing “not found,” it drops that page from search results.10 Catch these problems on the preview, before launch.
Should you do it yourself?
Do it yourself if your site is small, it doesn’t bring in much search traffic, you enjoy this kind of project, and your time is free.

Questions owners ask
Do I need to know how to code? No, but it helps to be comfortable reading what Claude tells you and checking its work carefully.
Which Claude plan do I need? Any paid plan includes Claude Code.1 Big sites may use up a Pro plan’s limits faster.
Can Claude move my images? It can use images you’ve downloaded. Don’t leave them linked to Squarespace, because those links break when you cancel.7
What about my forms? Squarespace forms don’t come with you. You’ll need a form service or a simple form handler on your new host, plus spam protection.
