What Squarespace’s Export Includes (and What It Leaves Behind)

Short answer: Squarespace’s export gives you basic layout pages, one blog with its posts, gallery pages, and text and image blocks. It skips most other page types, extra blogs, menus, headers and footers, drafts, audio and video, your styles, and your custom CSS. Exported images can come across as links back to Squarespace’s servers, so they can break when you cancel.1 Before you leave, capture your live site and save everything on the list below.

What the export includes

According to Squarespace, the export includes:1

The file is in a format meant for importing into WordPress.1

What it leaves behind

Squarespace lists these as not exported:1

That’s a lot of a typical site. A portfolio site, for example, may lose its main pages entirely.

The image trap

Squarespace warns that when the export is imported into WordPress, images may come across as links back to Squarespace, not as the actual files. When you close your Squarespace site, those links stop working.1 One owner who moved found the same thing: their export held image links that still pointed at Squarespace.2 Download every image you need before you cancel.

Everything to save before you cancel

Use this list. Most of it isn’t in the export.

Why the export isn’t enough for a move

The export was built to send a blog to WordPress. A real move needs the whole site: every page, its layout, its look, its images, and every address. That’s why careful moves capture the live site page by page instead of relying on the export file.

When we move a site, our agent reads every page of the live site, records every image, form, and embed, and checks the finished site against the original on desktop and phone.

Questions owners ask

Where is the export button? In your site’s settings, under Import and Export. Squarespace’s help page has current steps.1

Can I export my whole Squarespace site? No. The export covers basic pages and one blog.1 The rest has to be captured from the live site.

Will my images move with the export? Not reliably. They may come across as links that break when you cancel.1 Download them yourself.

Can I export my products? Yes, as a spreadsheet of product details.3 Product pages themselves aren’t in the site export.1

Can I keep my site after cancelling, just in case? Squarespace shows a “Website expired” message after cancellation, and you can reactivate the site later, but content may be deleted if it stays expired too long.6 Don’t count on that as a backup. Save everything first.
