Squarespace Alternatives for Small Business (2026): Honest Verdicts

Short answer: For a store, Shopify. For a site with lots of plugins and a developer on call, WordPress. For a designer-built site, Webflow. For a service business that wants to own its site and change it by asking AI, a site you own, edited with Claude. Wix is easy to start, but you can’t take the site with you, so leaving means a rebuild. And staying on Squarespace is a fine choice if it’s working.

We move Squarespace sites into sites owners run themselves, so that’s the option we sell. We’ve tried to be fair to every option here, including staying put.

The comparison

Option Best for Upkeep Easy to leave later?
Stay on Squarespace Owners who are happy there, stores and member areas Low. Squarespace handles it. Partly. The export covers basic pages and one blog.1
WordPress Sites that need many plugins High. Updates, plugins, and security are on you. Yes. Posts and pages export to a standard file, and self-hosted WordPress runs on hosting you choose.2
Wix Beginners starting fresh Low No. Wix sites can’t be hosted anywhere else.3
Webflow Design-heavy sites with a designer Medium Partly. Code exports on paid Workspace plans, but forms, store, and CMS content need rebuilding.4
Shopify Serious online stores Low to medium Partly. Products, customers, and orders export as spreadsheets. Pages and blog posts don’t.5
ChatGPT Sites Quick internal tools and prototypes Low Unclear. It’s a new beta, and code export isn’t documented.6
A site you own, edited with Claude Service businesses, creatives, consultants Low. Plain files, no plugins. Yes. Every file is already yours.

Each option, in plain words

Stay on Squarespace

Squarespace is polished, secure, and easy. Its AI tools now rewrite text, generate images, and (where rolled out) change site text and styles from a chat.7 Prices rose up to 26% in July 2026,8 which is why many owners are looking around. If your site works and you use its store or member features, staying is reasonable. More: Should You Leave Squarespace After the 2026 Price Increase?

WordPress

WordPress can do almost anything, thanks to its plugins. That’s also its weak spot: in 2025, 91% of the 11,334 new security holes found in WordPress plugins, themes, and core were in plugins.9 Expect regular updates, either by you or someone you pay. Choose it if you need features only plugins provide and have help to maintain them.

Wix

Wix is easy for beginners. The catch is lock-in. Wix says your site “must run on Wix’s servers” and can’t be moved to another host.3 If you ever leave, you rebuild.

Webflow

Webflow gives designers fine control. You can export the site’s code on a paid Workspace plan, but features that depend on Webflow (forms, search, the store, password protection) stop working, and blog content exports separately as spreadsheets.4 Choose it if a designer builds and maintains your site.

Shopify

For selling products, Shopify is the standard. Products, customers, and orders export as spreadsheets, but blog posts and pages have to be copied by hand or with an app.5 Overkill for a service business with no products.

ChatGPT Sites

OpenAI launched Sites in public beta on July 9, 2026, for paid ChatGPT plans. ChatGPT builds and hosts the site, and you can point a domain you own at it.6 According to Playcode’s guide, OpenAI’s own examples lean toward dashboards, prototypes, and internal tools.6 It’s new, it lives inside OpenAI’s product, and whether you can take the code with you isn’t documented. Worth watching, but a risky home for a business site that brings in customers.

A site you own, edited with Claude

This is the option built for running your site with AI agents. If you already use Claude for other work, this is where that carries over to your website. Squarespace’s official developer tools don’t let outside software edit pages or posts.10 Unofficial tools that use your Squarespace login exist, but Squarespace doesn’t support them. On a site you own, any agent can work on your files.

Your site becomes plain files in your own GitHub account, hosted on Cloudflare. Hosting plain files there is free with no limit on visits.11 To make a change, you tell Claude what you want, and it edits the files. Claude Code, the version of Claude that works on files, is included in all paid Claude plans. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.12 Claude can also run on a schedule, reviewing your content and drafting updates for you to approve.13 There are no plugins to update and no platform to rent. The trade-off: the move has to be done carefully, especially the redirects that protect your Google rankings. See How to Edit Your Website by Talking to Claude and The Redirect Checklist.

Whatever you choose: protect your rankings

Switching platforms almost always changes some page addresses. Each one that changes needs a permanent redirect, or Google treats the old page as gone. That’s true whichever platform you move to. Our redirect checklist works for any of them.

Questions owners ask

What’s the cheapest Squarespace alternative? Hosting plain files on Cloudflare costs nothing.11 You’ll pay for a domain, and for an AI plan if you want to edit by asking. The move itself is the main cost.

What’s the easiest to leave later? Self-hosted WordPress and a site you own. Wix is the hardest, because it can’t be hosted elsewhere.3

Is Wix better than Squarespace? For beginners, they’re similar. Squarespace at least exports basic pages and a blog.1 Wix doesn’t let you take the site anywhere.3

Can I move to WordPress and still edit with AI? Yes, but you’ll still maintain plugins and updates. A site you own as plain files avoids that work.
