Squarespace AI vs Editing Your Own Site With Claude
Short answer: Squarespace AI is good at writing and image work inside the Squarespace editor, and it’s included with your plan. Claude, working on a site you own, can change anything in the site’s files, because nothing limits it to a template. It can also work on a schedule while you’re busy with other things. Clarkson works only while you chat with it. If you’re staying on Squarespace, use its AI. If you want no ceiling on what you can change, agents that keep your site current, and a site you own outright, that’s the case for moving.
What Squarespace AI can do
According to Squarespace, its AI can:1
- Write and rewrite text in text blocks, blog posts, product descriptions, email campaigns, and more. It can shorten, lengthen, or simplify what you’ve written.
- Write search descriptions and image alt text (on newer 7.1 sites).
- Make images. Generate new ones from a description, create sets of four related images, and “reshoot” existing photos with new lighting or positions. Image work uses AI credits.
- Make changes from a chat. Clarkson, Squarespace’s AI chat, can:1
- Change text on a page or in blocks
- Add or replace images in image blocks
- Update your site styles
- Create and edit products and discounts
- Draft and schedule email campaigns
- Edit and manage contacts
- Review and summarize your site’s analytics
Squarespace says it’s rolling Clarkson out “in waves, so it may not be available on your site yet.”1
What’s not on the list: adding new sections, new pages, or a new blog. Squarespace doesn’t list structural changes like these among Clarkson’s abilities,1 so for now you make them by hand in the Squarespace editor. Squarespace is still rolling Clarkson out as of the date of this article (October 2026), so this may change.
What editing your own site with Claude looks like
On a site you own, your pages are plain files in your GitHub account. Claude Code, the version of Claude that works on files, reads the whole site, makes the change you ask for, and can save it to GitHub. It runs in a browser at claude.ai/code, in the Claude desktop app, or in a terminal.2 It’s included in every paid Claude plan.3
You might say:
- “Add a testimonial from Jordan to the home page, under the services section.”
- “Make the booking button bigger on phones.”
- “Create a new page for our spring workshop, in the same style as the events page.”
- “Our hours changed to 9 to 5. Update them everywhere.”

Why you can’t run a Squarespace site with a team of agents
An AI agent needs a way in. Squarespace’s official developer tools let outside software work with products, orders, inventory, contacts, discounts, domains, and scheduling. None of them let software create or edit your pages, blog posts, or design.5 So Clarkson is the only supported AI that can change your Squarespace site’s content, and only while you’re chatting with it.
On a site you own, any agent you choose can work on your files. One can research your industry and suggest articles to write. Another can study which pages perform best and draft improvements to the weaker ones. Another can check every link each week. Each one drafts its changes for your approval. Which one suits you
Stay with Squarespace AI if you sell products, rely on Squarespace’s store or member areas, mostly want help writing, or like the visual editor.
Move to a site you own if you want changes made in minutes, want an AI agent maintaining your site on a schedule, keep hitting the template’s limits, or want to own the files and choose your AI tool.
One honest caution: editing with Claude is powerful, and a careless change could break a page. That’s why sites we move come with a site guide for Claude. It describes how your site is built and sets rules Claude follows, like never changing a page address without adding a redirect.
Questions owners ask
Is Squarespace AI available on every site? Not yet. Squarespace is rolling out Clarkson in waves.1
Can I connect Claude to my Squarespace site? Squarespace’s own AI works inside Squarespace. Some third-party tools offer ways to connect Claude to a Squarespace site; we haven’t tested them. Without one, Claude can help you write text that you paste in.
Do I need to know code to edit with Claude? No. You describe the change in plain words and check the preview. Claude handles the code.
Can I use a different AI tool later? Yes. Your site is plain files in your own account, so any tool that edits files can work on it.
