Why Squarespace Isn’t Built for AI Agents

Short answer: AI agents need a way into your site’s content. Squarespace’s official developer tools let outside software work with products, orders, contacts, and domains, but not with pages, blog posts, or design.1 Squarespace’s own AI chat, Clarkson, can change text, images, and styles, but only while you’re chatting with it.2 Unofficial tools can reach your pages through your Squarespace login, but Squarespace doesn’t support them and they can break without warning. So you can’t really run a Squarespace site with a team of agents.

What Squarespace lets software do

Squarespace lists these developer tools:1

There’s no tool for creating or editing pages, blog posts, sections, or site design.1 Some of these tools are invite-only.1

What about Clarkson?

Clarkson, Squarespace’s AI chat, can change page text, add or replace images, update styles, manage products and discounts, draft email campaigns, manage contacts, and summarize analytics.2 It works when you start a chat. It doesn’t run on a schedule, and it isn’t on Squarespace’s list of tools for adding new sections or pages.2 Squarespace is also still rolling it out, so it may not be on your site yet.2 More: Squarespace AI vs Editing Your Own Site With Claude

The workarounds, and their limits

A guide from Claude CMS, a tool that connects Claude to website platforms, lists three ways people connect Claude to Squarespace:3

Workaround What it can do The catch
Community connectors built on Squarespace’s tools Products, inventory, orders Can’t edit page layouts or sections3
Letting Claude control your browser Click and type in the Squarespace editor The guide calls it “slow, session-bound and fragile”3
Claude writes code you paste in Custom styles and snippets You still paste it by hand3
Unofficial tools that use your Squarespace login Edit pages, posts, menus, and more4 Not supported by Squarespace. They work through your browser login cookies, so they can break when Squarespace changes its editor, and they hand a tool your full logged-in session.4

None of these give an agent dependable, supported, scheduled access to your pages.

What agents actually need

An agent needs Squarespace A site you own
Direct access to pages and posts No1 Yes. They’re plain files in your GitHub account.
An agent that works on a schedule No. Clarkson works only while you chat.2 Yes, with Claude Code routines5
Agent changes held for your review No agent access to pages1 Yes. Changes go to a separate branch until you approve them.5
A choice of AI Clarkson only Any tool that can edit files

What this looks like on a site you own

On a site you own, one agent can research your industry and suggest articles. Another can study your Search Console data and draft better titles and openings for weak pages. Another can check links and flag outdated posts every week. Each drafts its changes for your approval. Full guide: Run Your Website With a Team of AI Agents

Questions owners ask

Will Squarespace add this later? Maybe. Nothing in Squarespace’s published developer tools suggests it today.1

Can I use Claude to write content for my Squarespace site? Yes. Claude can draft posts and page text that you paste in. What it can’t do is make the changes on the site by itself.

Is moving the only option? If you want agents working on your pages, yes, you’ll need a site where pages are files you control. Our guide covers how to move safely: Leaving Squarespace in 2026. Or start with the free site check below.
